Regarding Rusty's
military service survey of the blogosphere, a commenter objects:
Its disgusting that you legitimize this fraudulent meme of the Left, Rusty.
The meme SPQR is talking about is the often-repeated phrase "chickenhawk" tossed at war supporters who haven't served in the military, or (since G.W. Bush is a veteran, and therefore passes the test) haven't served in combat. Yes, it is a meme, but Rusty isn't legitimizing it. In fact, quite the opposite.

I followed an argument on a blog last year whereby one person called the other a chickenhawk. The recipient of the insult said he had indeed served in the military. The insulter got snippy and said, "What were you? A pot scrubber?" the other fellow said (I'll paraphrase because I can't find the actual words again), "Actually, I was a bomb technician. And before you have anymore inane questions or comments, yes, my time was mostly spent bored to tears punctuated occasionally with moments of sheer terror. And I had as much respect for the guys who washed dishes, typed reports and mopped floors. They all had a purpose and deserve respect." The insulting party never returned. If he had any character at all, he would have apologized.
THAT TOO is why Rusty's project has merit. Idiots like that guy.

Has everyone forgotten that use to be in war everyone did what they could? Thats how you win. Americans out there right now are totally ignoring this. Should we loose they are as much or more responsable then even the opposition to the war. I may not have served but to ignore it would shirking my duty as an American citizen. If all you do is send a Private some cookies you are helping.

Yeah, I saw Starship Troopers the other night too, and couldn't help thinking of the enigmatic connection between Heinlein's fictionalized attitudes and modern resistance to the GWOT and Iraq. You'll never hear anyone in the Bush admin utter anything like Doogie Howser's line, "I send thousands of people just like you to their deaths every day; I'm sorry if that sounds harsh to you. But listen, boys and girls, we're in it for the species. It's simple numbers - they have more."
But the main problem I have is one of the premises in the Chickenhawk discourse, that military/combat experience gives one
moral authority. Morality is concerned with what is right, what is good, and what is virtuous, and, according to the
American Heritage Dictionary, is "based on strong likelihood or firm conviction, rather than on the actual evidence: a moral certainty.
I believe people, deceptively or otherwise, are substituting the use of "moral" for "empirical," meaning "Relying on or derived from observation or experiment: empirical results that supported the hypothesis;" or "Verifiable or provable by means of observation or experiment: empirical laws" or "Guided by practical experience and not theory, especially in medicine." The problem with this is that one person's empirical observations prove useful only in terms of what they themselves can replicate, such as how to behave in combat, but not in terms of applying this to a larger, unrelated sphere, such as strategy. Even a greater sampling of soldiers will only yield information on how to soldier, not how to strategize a war.
So whatever the anti-chickenhawks call themselves, they have no more authority on the war in Iraq to claim, moral or otherwise, than any other informed observer, unless you change the argument entirely. I therefore find Rusty's correlation between service, bias and opinion to be very interesting.

This certainly extends Markos's expertise from the military to foreign policy. He was almost in a war and, now we come to learn, that Markos almost worked at the State department.
{Jerome} Armstrong: Markos started reading MyDD in 2001, and was one of the first people to write comments on my postings. He emailed me to tell me he was starting his own blog, Fishy Shark in 2002, which I linked to. Later, he started DailyKos.
We started e-mailing back and forth, and
he {Kos}told me near the end of that year (2002) that he was going to stop blogging because he was about to start working for the State department.
I was already talking to the Dean folks and Trippi was asking me to build a blog and other stuff. I knew Markos had a strong computer background, and so I invited him up to Portland where I was living, and so we gelled in a day or two.

This sort of parallels the story of Fidel Castro, then aspiring baseball pitcher, not getting called up by the Yankees back in the 50s. Had Markos gone to work at the State Department, had DailyKos not gone through its growth and had the influence that it did -- who knows what would have happened?

Actually, I think the term "moral authority" is misleading, because it simply means that the person who has it also has a low probability of being hypocritical in terms of physical courage. I have no problem with that, but it's different from "moral clarity," which has a great deal more to do with morality, justice, and even validity. There's also experiencial and expert authority.
I agree that everyone ought to be paying some price for this war, and it's ironic that one reason it has become unpopular is precisely because the costs are borne so narrowly. We aren't yet invested in it, as a nation.

fwiw - I think it's reasonable to ask "If you support the War, what have you done in support of this war?" Some non-enlist, train, deploy to Iraq options would include:
* donate blood - You've had 12 opportunities to donate blood since the war started, how many times have you actually donated blood?
* donate time/money - Have you donated time or money to a charitable cause for either the troops or the families of the troops.
There doesn't have to be a specific level reached for either dollars or blood, but people who just bang away on a keyboard on either side might consider doing either of the above.

Finn, I'm guessing GW could have been in the Marines and it wouldn't have been valid in your eyes - his privileged background provides the obscuring lens for any of his accomplishments to certain dog-in-the-manger types, and the permanently politically opposed, such as Democrats and liberals. And, by the standards of the chickenhawk argument, you'd have had to serve in order to criticize. Maybe you have.
Dem, I wonder if the whole notion of "authority" isn't another linguistic red herring. When words have their meanings twisted and facts such as pre-war intelligence are regularly discounted by one side, it's difficult to have much faith in managing a reasonable discussion. Such chicanery is typical of people who will use any means to get what they want.
You mentioned on my post that there was a use of the term, moral authority. Is this among historians? I'm liberal arts, so I have some history along with the social sciences and lit. In my academic and personal reading, I've never come across it. Thanks.

Completly Beyond Reason
Those who believe in the adage "when it rains, it pours" might take the tale of the plaintiffs in Kelo v. New London as a cue to buy two of every animal and a load of wood from Home Depot. The U.S. Supreme Court recently found that the city's original seizure of private property was constitutional under the principal of eminent domain, and now New London is claiming that the affected homeowners were living on city land for the duration of the lawsuit and owe back rent. It's a new definition of chutzpah: Confiscate land and charge back rent for the years the owners fought confiscation.
In some cases, their debt could amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Moreover, the homeowners are being offered buyouts based on the market rate as it was in 2000.
Yes, you read that right. Not only have these people wrongfully had their homes taken by one of the stupidest Supreme Court decisions in our nation's history, but they are then told that they have to pay rent on their own property for the duration of the lawsuit. I'm certain that some (if not all) will sue, and if they lose this one, someone needs to be impeached.

Chuck Hagel's Fretful Vision
My frickin' satellite TV is out, so I'm relying an a backup that has only CNN. Today, on the Wolfe Blitzer Show (or whatever it's called)
Chuck Hagel was allowed, or encouraged, to pontificate in an especially headstrong manner. I'm going to have to paraphrase his remarks, because I just don't have access to the transcript yet, but essentially he responded to a question about crafting an "informed opinion" on Iraq with something like:
"Well, all I can do is rely on the same information available to the public, all of which seems to suggest that we're losing, rather than winning, in Iraq." [There were some references suggesting that electricity production is down, etc..]
Well, I beg to differ "Chuck" but you're a Senator who, presumabaly, has access to a great deal more information than we have as a private citizens. Plus you're pulling down the big bucks for your level of authority and responsibility. So just where do you get off making a statement claiming that you're just one of the crowd who sees Cindy Sheehan as credible?

Well, in my capacity as a campaign manager for a couple of races, one for US Representative and one for State Representative, I can take a fairly educated guess. Basically everyone serving in office nowadays has to run a more or less perpetual campaign, which means that a serving Senator or Congressman always has people around him/her whose sole job is to promote every remotely positive feature of that politician, and to downplay everything that's remotely negative. The entire focus of the entourage is on the politician, so they're constantly getting this distorted feedback about themselves convincing them that they're damn near flawless human beings, wiser than Solomon and braver than Achilles. For most of us mortals, that sort of thing turns our heads. It takes a real mensch to maintain a realistic sense of self with all that going on, and there just aren't many around.

It's so surreal that it's almost funny. The reason many in the world hate us--and the reason many terrorists believe they are engaged in a noble cause-- is because they read stories like this and believe them.
People's Daily:
US troops held five children as hostages to demand handover of insurgents near a northern Iraqi town on Tuesday, police said.
"The US forces surrounded the village of Mazraa near Baiji and detained five children under 10 years old, calling on the residents by loudspeakers to hand over several other children showed on TV channels celebrating the killing of US soldiers after roadside blast last week," a police source from Baiji told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The US troops threatened to sweep the village by Wednesday morning to detain the other children and suspected insurgents, he said.
The US military, however, said they had no information about the incident.

Can anyone prove it could not have happened? Since this logical paradox of "if you can't prove that there's no way it exists, it exists" works with gods and such, it applies here as well.
If it's true I suspect some guys were grumpy and drunk
(since the noble art of making booze out of rations has been known here for 500 years, your guys should know it as well) and figured they should get some revenge. Your army has a tainted recent history with kids, maybe they moved the guys paying African kids candy for sex and the guys who had sex with minors in Japan to Iraq.
(in case you didn't know, ever since WWII you've had a base in Japan, since they weren't allowed to have an army for a while and they needed one to avoid becoming Chinese)
Suspected response: "WHAT?!?! NEVER HEARD, NEVER HAPPENED, SOSIALIST BASTARD!"
Not sosialist, centrist, and yes it did happen since it was in the news here and EuroNews with big headlines, victims and interviews, and there's no way anyone can prove it could not have happened.

Jihad Comes Back to Bosnia
Followers of this will not be surprised, but evidence continues to mount that Bosnia is becoming the focus point for global jihadis in training. But, wait, I thought Bosnia........??

Terrorists who previously targeted the U.S. are now in Bosnia, where they have access to a "one-stop shop" of jihad training camps, weapons and illegal Islamic 'charities' -- all at the doorstep of Europe, terrorism experts said.
"[Convicted terrorist] Karim Said Atmani recently returned to Bosnia after being released early from French prison for 'good behavior,'" terrorism expert and author Evan Kohlmann said.
Atmani, a Moroccan, was linked to the "millennium bomb plot" and convicted by a French court of colluding with Osama bin Laden. He has been linked to the Armed Islamic Group (GIA), an organization responsible for airplane hijackings and subway bombings in France...
Also finding haven in Bosnia is Abu el Maali, who like Atmani, was a foreign national who fought in the Bosnia war. El Maali was later accused by French authorities of attempting to smuggle explosives in 1998 to an Egyptian terrorist group plotting to destroy U.S. military installations in Germany. He was also accused of leading terrorist cells in Bosnia, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
"This activity is very significant," said Kohlmann. "Senior members of the former Muslim Brigade and their top commanders are still there, and they're still active."....
Cybercast News Service has also obtained a video that terrorism analysts say depicts an active jihad training camp in Bosnia-Herzegovina, a region previously described by analysts as an ideal gateway for terror missions into Europe.
The video, which is over four minutes in length, shows outdoor maneuvers, explosives training and training inside what appears to be a school gym. Exercises in hostage-taking are also shown....
The presence of active jihadist camps in Bosnia-Herzegovina was also confirmed by attorney and counter-terrorism expert Darko Trifunovic, who previously served as a diplomat in the foreign service of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Kohlmann said that the main camps used during the war have been closed, and a different tactic for jihad training has emerged: disguising them as youth camps. "These days, usually the kind of jihad camp you'll see in Bosnia and other countries are so-called 'youth camps.'" They are usually led by a former member of the mujahadeen, someone with military experience, and perhaps a fundamentalist cleric, said Kohlmann....
Al Qaeda cells were set up in Bosnia in the early 1990s by Ayman al Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's right-hand man, and bin Laden was said to visit the area twice in the mid-1990s," Brown added. "Iran was very involved in supporting the Islamist separatist movement in Bosnia, and Hezbollah was doing training there in the 1990s."
Training also takes place inside youth centers and school gyms, according to Trifunovic....
Fortunately, all the experts seem to be in agreement that Bosnian Muslims are far more likely to be secular in orientation than Muslims of other countries. Unfortunately, it only takes a small number of well trained people to commit major acts of terrorism. Hat tip:

The discourse is losing its constraints, and the memes no longer live forever.

I find it amusing that the leftards don't even seem to notice that they are increasingly talking only to themselves. They are stuck in a feedback loop and they keep upping the signal power thinking that they're reaching more people, but really they're just shouting louder and louder only to themselves, kind of like having a conversation with their own echo.
Their propaganda efforts are exposed daily as the lies they are, and they lose credibility every time they open their mouths. They claim that we want to shut them up, but that's not true; we would like for them to shut up, but that's not the same. They have the right to be as loud and stupid as they like, because the more they say, the stronger we become.
